Sparky is one of three horses that came to Ruby Ranch through the El Paso County Sheriff's Department. He has a BLM freezebrand indicating that he is a mustang. Sparky is about 13.2 and came to us a little on the thin side. He is very personable, leads up nicely and trailer loads. We're working on picking up feet and other ground tasks and when he gains a little weight we will see if he's had some saddle training.
Our terrific veterinarian team, Dr. Sandra Grover and Brian Grover, floated Sparkie's teeth and gave him an approximate foal date of spring 2001.
Update: Sparky showed us that he has been handled and worn a saddle in the past. He picks up his hooves and can be tacked up quite easily. He loves human attention and will follow you around. He doesn't mind a rider climbing on his back but is uncertain about walking out. Perhaps he was used as a pack horse or perhaps he prefers a smaller person in the saddle. We will continue with our assessment to discover just what this pony knows.
Update: Sparky is doing well on the trails at the walk and trot. He has more training to accomplish a nice canter transition. This is an energetic horse (we sometimes call him attention deficit!) who likes to move out and would love a confident rider to carry to new places.
